While HMAS Kanimbla was participating in Op Resolute in July/August, an ironman competition with a difference was held onboard.
Such was the gruelling nature of the contest, only 21 people from 28 starters finished the event.
The overall winner for the men was LEUT James Carroll and the female section winner was LEUT Sherrin Whiteman.
What made it so hard was that people were racing against not just other people but themselves. Many of the exercises were new to all the participants and they were put right out of their comfort zones.
There were five rounds over 15 days which meant that the contestants could have one to two days rest between rounds — and, boy, did they need those rest days.
Take round three for toughness, for example.
Male competitors were asked to complete a 1km row, 40 PFT/BFA push-ups and 50 PFT/BFA sit-ups for men. Females were required to do 25 PFT/BFA push-ups and 50 PFT/BFA sit-ups.
As the competition continued there was an extra buzz around the ship.
The final round was dubbed the 300 club because the total amount of repetitions conducted equalled 300.
Many people were dreading this round as many exercises were revisited from the previous four rounds.
One exercise was the dreaded box jumps. This required contestants to go from a half squat and jump, land in a half squat and stand up, legs straight. When they stepped off the box that was counted as one repetition. This was done 25 times. |
