When CDRE Steve Gilmore was told he was to take over as Commander of Australian Systems Command, he was thrilled.
He told his new charges that he had a spring in his step when he left the office of the Chief of Navy, VADM Russ Shalders AO, CSC, RAN.
“I felt that way because of what I knew about this Command,” he said at a change of command ceremony at Campbell Park in Canberra on September 21.
“I recognised the critical part that NAVSYSCOM has in the Royal Australian Navy.
“The Command helps generate what Navy is all about – and that is a fleet that can go to sea and fight and win in a maritime environment.”
CDRE Gilmore has taken over as commander from CDRE Peter Jones who is due to be promoted to rear admiral before taking up his new position in October as Head Information Capabilility Management Division (HICMD) at the Chief Information Officer Group at Russell.
Along with VADM Shalders, dozens of men and women from Australian Systems Command gathered to see him off on September 21, and welcome CDRE Gilmore.
CDRE Jones spoke fondly of his 422 days in charge, and he said, although there had been challenges, not one of those days had been a bad one.
“I have come to appreciate the astonishing array of activities that you undertake,” he said.
“The strength of NAVSYSCOM is your professionalism, diversity of talent combined with your common desire to ensure that the Royal Australian Navy remains one of the world’s great navies.
“Do not underestimate the importance of your contribution to the Navy and the nation.”
