HMAS Darwin’s Executive Officer and Chief Coxswain pounded the pavement in unfamiliar garb during the recent Sydney City to Surf race to raise thousands of dollars for their ship’s charity.

They cast aside their pride and donned baby outfits all in the name of charity, to raise funds for the Sir David Martin Foundation (SDMF), the ship’s principle charity.

The Sydney City to Surf was seen as a prime opportunity to raise funds for the SDMF. The ship’s company were challenged to raise a minimum of $1000. To encourage donations XO Lieutenant Commander Phillip Hiatt and CPO Raymond Rosendale agreed to race in the unusual attire.

SDMF was established 17 years ago, by the late RADM Sir David Martin (rtd), a former Australian Fleet Commander and Governor of NSW. The foundation assists homeless youths and provides care and rehabilitation services.

Since adopting SDMF, Darwin crew have regularly visited one of the services, Triple Care Farm, on 100 acres at Robertson in southern NSW.

The farm provides a nurturing environment for troubled youths aged between 16 and 21. It is designed to help them take the first steps in re-building their lives. The youths gain occupational skills ranging from panel beating, landscaping, computer skills and art.

During each visit, personnel from Darwin conduct maintenance around the farm and interact with youth undertaking the program.

As a result of this fundraising initiative Darwin raised $2337 in three weeks, including a $1000 donation from Patricks Defence Logistics.
