If you fancy leaving the skimmers and joining the silent service, DSCM is offering a taste of what it is like to serve in submarines without having to transfer category.
If you are a BM or CSO(MW), you have the opportunity to temporarily become employed on submarines. You will remain part of your current category for all intents and purposes (promotions), but you will serve on submarines with all pay and allowances that go with it.
Successful completion of the course will require a minimum of two years’ submarine service before you can return to your original branch. A formal transfer of category (TOC) request can be made at any time during the two years.
Reversion to your original source category will automatically occur after the required service if you have decided against this.
If you join short submarine tenure, you will not be disadvantaged in any way. You will share the challenge and excitement of what the Submarine arm has to offer, whilst gaining new skills and benefits without having to formally TOC.
ABCSO(MW) Wayne Broad who is undertaking SM training, will be receiving his promotion to LSCSO(MW) with effect on August 13, even though he will serve on submarines.
“After four and bit years on surface boats I jumped at the chance of expanding my knowledge,” AB Broad said.
“Submarines were always an interest, the extra money was enticing, but the main thing (on deciding to do the trial) was staying on the promotion roster and not losing seniority.
“I recommend having a crack, nothing to lose really. It’s all pretty exciting.”
