Don’t be surprised to see CHAP Russell Smith roll up on a motorbike at his new posting at Fleet Base East in Sydney.
CHAP Smith, who has moved down from HMAS Coonawarra, rides a Triumph Tiger 955.
He was a common sight on his bike in Darwin but he also got round in a car in Darwin – but the motorbike will be his sole mode of transport in Sydney.
CHAP Smith wasn’t the only chaplain on two wheels in Darwin.
Earlier this year, along with CHAP Robert Paget from RAAF Darwin and CHAP Andrew McNeill from 1CSSB Robertson Barracks, he completed a one-day Road Survival Skills Motorcycle Training Course at Hidden Valley Race Way.
The course was funded as part of the Defence Motorcycle Safety Initiative launched by the Minister for Defence, Brendan Nelson, last year.
CHAP Smith has been riding for 36 years, starting as a motocross racer.
He bought his Triumph Tiger 955 last year and took it on a whirlwind ride right around Australia, stopping to see the Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island and catching up with friends in Melbourne and Perth. |
