LS Dion Blair came home with a wet sail and a full head of steam to win the men’s section of the Australian Defence Road Cycling Championships at RAAF Base Williamtown on July 14-15.

His win gave Navy a coveted double after CPO Paul Hurst (HMAS Penguin) claimed the overall B-grade championship by winning both the road race and criterium and finishing third in the 20.5km time trial in 33.20.

Home base gave Air Force cyclists some advantage but not the ultimate edge as they gained a share of the minor medals.

Navy and Army took the lion’s share of the honours thanks to the efforts of LS Blair and CPO Hurst, and CPL Fiona Bradfield of the ADF Investigative Service at Lavarack Barracks in Townsville.

CPL Bradfield was the overall women’s champion after winning the road race, criterium and the 20.5km time trial in 36:34.

After racing that Australian Defence Cycle Club president SGT Mick Rand described as “fast and furious all weekend with aggressive races held in the best of competitive spirits”, LS Blair proved unstoppable in the criterium and 33.5km time trial in 49:12 to be the overall A-grade champion.

CPL Jason Roberts (Banksmeadow), who was fourth in the criterium, won the A-grade men’s road race from AB Cameron Schmid (Fleet Base West) and LS Julian Amos (HMAS Cerberus) but that was the only road discipline LS Blair did not dominate.

LS Blair beat Jason Pelham and Kable Mitchell in the criterium as well as winning the time trial. “LS Blair was a deserved overall champion,” SGT Rand said.

“He dominated the criterium and time trial and used his time trialing skills to take out both races convincingly.
