Midshipman Steven Flett was thrilled to receive a CANSC Commendation for his tireless work during the Three Peaks Race in Tasmania.

MIDN Flett worked on administrative requirements, advertising, ordering and purchasing equipment and numerous other tasks.

Once the planning phase was done, MIDN Flett was invited to participate in the race as a crew member on board Absolute Waterfront as part of Team Navy Gold.

MIDN Flett said the logistics of planning the Navy’s participation in the Three Peaks Race and being a competitor was very challenging but rewarding. “Participation was an added extra as I was initially there just to do admin.”

“During the race, I was running on about four hours of sleep a night.”

“While the runners were competing, we got the boat back into shipshape, did maintenance and had a feed.”

MIDN Flett worked on Navy Week 2007 at the same time as preparing for the Three Peaks Race held over the Easter long weekend. He said he learnt a lot about event management and gained a lot of knowledge from NHQ-Tas staff.

“It was a huge learning curve for me,” he said.

“I walked into NHQ-Tas knowing nothing and I’ve been shown something from every person here.”

“The staff gave me heaps of direction with how to get things done and made me think for myself.”

MIDN Flett starts the New Entry Officers Course at HMAS Creswell on July 17.
