Finding a life after Navy
From Chief of Navy
Volume 50, No. 13, July 26, 2007 |

Along with CDF and the other Service Chiefs, I am committed to improving the current level of support we provide to all members of the ADF, and their families, but particularly those who are in the process of discharging.
My commitment to managing the careers of Navy personnel does not cease when they separate from the Service. The transition management service is being reinvigorated to provide a simpler, more integrated and professionally supported process.
I am aware that separation from the Navy can be stressful, particularly for those who are leaving due to injury or illness.
New procedures have been developed in order to ease the burden on individuals and families, and to set up opportunities for gainful post-separation employment, and rehabilitation if required. Specifically, we are trying to simplify what can be a confusing process between Defence and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (DVA), particularly in relation to compensation and case management.
We have been working closely with DVA to ensure that the transition process is uncomplicated and as stress free as we can make it.
I remind you that support of members and their families during the transition process lies primarily with Commanding Officers and our divisional system.
I expect Navy’s leaders to guide, represent and ensure that the member’s employment remains appropriate and meaningful, and that those who are in the process of leaving remain engaged with a supportive command structure.
I draw your attention to the following documents recently released by CDF: Australian Defence Force Career Transition Policy Statement, and Secretary and Chief of the Defence Force Directive on the Career Transition of Australian Defence Force Personnel.
These documents outline Defence’s commitment to enhance separation policy and administration. I encourage you to become familiar with these guidelines if you are in the process of discharging.
The Directorate of Transition Management Services (DTMS) has been established within the Defence Support Group to coordinate and implement the reinvigorated transition management services. DTMS contact details are:
Director Transition Manage-ment Services: Ms Stacey Clarke, Ph 02-6266 3130. Email: stacey.fekete@defence.gov.au
