STRENGTHS: CMDR Greg Chesher accepts the award on behalf of SUBSAFE.

Innovation and excellence in the fields of occupational health and safety were rewarded at the Defence safety awards in Canberra on June 18.

The awards recognise the outstanding performance by areas within Defence in creating safer work environments. CDF ACM Angus Houston attended the ceremony and presented the awards to the recipients.

“Nothing is more important than ensuring that we have a safe and healthy workplace for all of our people in Defence, he said.

“This is a very important day because we recognise people through innovation, good ideas and people who come up with measures that make the workplace safer and make it healthier.”

Navy’s SUBSAFE program won the category for best workplace health and safety management system. The program commenced in 1986 during the construction of Collins Class Submarine.

The SUBSAFE Intranet site is issued to the Submarines on CD every quarter. The program records, investigates and implements corrections to identified hazards on a risk based priority. CMDR Greg Chesher Naval Certification Safety Acceptance Agency accepted the award.

“We’ve always had a strong process to identify hazards and taking it through to completion. I think what helped win the award was that we got two strengths together, the hazard identification program and the incident reports to identify risks,” he said.

“It’s quite rewarding to receive the award, but I’m only representing those people that are working on the system.”

A commendation was also presented in the same category to HMAS Mermaid for its Safety culture improvement program. A commendation was also awarded to the Navy for the Marine boarding party ladder in the category of best solution to an identified workplace health and safety issue.
