Armed and dangerous, Defence hockey players from across Australia fought out a week-long battle in the ADF combined services tournament in early June.
All had sights set on victory at the beginning of the competition in Albury on June 2, but there was always going to be only two winning teams.
Queensland defeated Victoria 5-1 in the men’s final and Australian Capital Territory overcame Victoria 4-2 in the w
The men’s final was set to be a tough match considering the two sides had drawn in their encounter during the week.
Both sides were scoreless until the last five minutes of the first half when a Queensland goal was quickly answered by a Victorian goal, taking the score to one-all at half time. Queensland came out strongly in the second half, scoring two goals early.
Seven minutes remained on the clock and Victoria made a surprise change, pulling their goal keeper off. It was clear in the final stages of the game though that the tactic had backfired.
Queensland flooded forward scoring again. Less than two minutes remained when FLGOFF Conlan Mallet swooped in for an easy goal shutting the Victorian side down and taking Queensland to a 5-1 victory.
Victoria was dominant in the first half of the women’s final. CPL Diane Casey opened the goal scoring in the sixth minute setting the tone for the remainder of the first half. ACT came out fighting in the second and LTCOL Brenda Sharp scored, taking the game to a tie three minutes in.
ACT took the lead for the first time in the game with 23 minutes remaining, when CPL Naomi Lewis scored.
Victoria answered the ACT goal after a short corner was saved by the goal keeper LEUT Donna Douglas for a 2-2 score line. ACT answered right back to be in the lead again 3-2. The Victorian side fought hard but could not get back in the game. ACT won 4-2.
Representing the ACT/NSW combined side, AB Zoe Kellermeyer said she had learnt a lot. She said anyone with an interest in hockey should try and get to one of the tournaments.
“This was my first tournament, I have had a lot of fun, it is definitely a good experience,” she said.
The ACT/NSW women’s team played Queensland for third and fourth place on the final day of competition.
Though Queensland won, AB Kellermeyer said, “Our last game was probably the best we played, we worked together as a team and some of the girls got their confidence up, at the start of the tournament they really did not know how to play and by the last game we proved that we could do what we planned to do.”
AB Kellermeyer was best player for ACT/NSW and was also selected to represent ADF. The ADF team will play in a national level competition to be held in Mackay later this year. |
