The RAAF School of Technical Training (RAAFSTT), RAAF Base Wagga, graduated 18 new members into the ADF on Thursday, June 7. They will undertake maintenance of ADF Rotary Wing Aviation assets. Of the 18 graduates, nine were Navy Aviation Technician Avionics (ATV) personnel.

CDRE Nigel Coates, Director General Navy Personnel and Training (DGNPT) was the parade reviewing officer with CMDR Allen Whittaker, RAN, Director Training Authority-Aviation (DTA-AVN), in attendance to welcome and congratulate the graduates. This will be one of DGNPT’s final graduation parades before taking on the role as Commander Australian Fleet in July 2007.

The ATV course, conducted over 63 weeks at RAAF Base Wagga, the Aviation Technician training establishment for all three Services, is considered to be one of the hardest technical courses in the ADF. The course is split into two phases consisting of 53 weeks for the ADF core phase and 10 weeks for the RAN unique phase. During their time at RAAFSTT, the trainees learnt both theoretical and practical skills in aviation related avionics. SMNATV Ryan King took out all three awards for the course, including the course Dux Award, CO RAAFSTT Award and the HMAS Nirimba Prize.

All the graduates post to HMAS Albatross to undertake specific aircraft Equipment Application Courses prior to completing their competency journals on one of four Navy squadrons and possibly Ship’s Flights.
