Some came running but none quite as fast as Peter Conway and CPL Jeni Greenland in the 2007 HMAS Kuttabul versus Thales Ship to Shore 5km Fun Run/Walk on May 16.

The competition at HMAS Kuttabul and areas of Fleet Base East, attracted 177 runners and walkers from Thales (the defence contractor), and representatives from both ships and establishments, including all three services, with all Navy entrants competing under the Kuttabul banner.

Peter Conway was the overall open male winner in 16:30. Army’s CPL Jeni Greenland, of the Land Warfare Centre at Moorebank, was the women’s overall open winner in 20:37. The overall veteran males’ category was won by John Robson, of Thales, in 18:02.

The walkers results were: open male walker, Cameron Martin, (Defence civilian); women, Margaret Lee (Thales); veteran male, Sean Delaney.

The course took the competitors from the Navy Indoor Sports Centre, past Fleet Base One, turning towards Fleet Support Unit Sydney, back past the Navy Indoor Sports Centre, along the wharf down towards the famous ‘Harry’s Pies’, and turning at the Fleet Base entrance to Garden Island.

The better runners rounded the half-way point in less than nine minutes, with the fastest walkers not too far behind.

The race then continued around the perimeter of Garden Island including a short distance into the public access area and Navy Heritage Centre.

Category winners received medallions and gift vouchers at the free barbecue lunch and refreshments which followed.

The 2007 Kuttabul-Thales Challenge Shield was awarded to Thales Industries, with the day topped off by the announcement of the lucky draw prizes.

“The day was a great success with more than double the participation of 2006,” one of the organisers LSPT Travis Lovell said.

“Special thanks must go to the photographer, the medics and all the Sydney area physical training staff and military fitness leaders for assisting throughout.”
