As part of Navy’s ongoing regional engagement plan, HMAS Manoora made a four-day port visit to Jakarta from May 19 to 23.

This was a first for HMAS Manoora and many of the ship’s company.

The Indonesian Navy gave Manoora a warm welcome with a large banner on the wharf stating: “Welcome/Selamat Datang HMAS Manoora port visit to Jakarta.”

The Commanding Officer of HMAS Manoora, CMDR Charles McHardie, was greeted with Indonesian flowers and cultural dancers.

Chief of Australian Navy, Vice Admiral Russ Shalders, AO, CSC, RAN hosted an official function on board Manoora.

Government members, local dignitaries, Indonesian Navy and Australian Defence personnel where among some of the guests.

On the aft flight deck, Manoora’s Ceremonial Guard and colour party performed a ceremonial sunset.

During the visit Manoora played sport against the Indonesian Navy and a local touch football team the Jakarta Dragons.

Other sports conducted were tug-o-war, volleyball and soccer.

The soccer was played early in the morning before it got too hot, but in spite of that Manoora’s soccer team turned up the heat in the last five minutes to win the game 4-3.

The Manoora tug-o-war team, easily outweighing the Indonesians, won 3-0, but the Indonesian Navy turned the tables in volleyball, winning all three games. Despite the challenge of languages both sides had a fun and friendly day of sport.

HMAS Manoora’s ship’s company enjoyed their port visit to Jakarta, many saying it had been a real eye opener.
