On May 15 HMAS Waller cast off lines and turned bow to sea for the first time in just over three years.
After a lengthy full cycle docking incorporating the installation of the Replacement Combat System and Common Broadband Advanced Sonar System heavyweight torpedo upgrade, the crew of Waller turned the boat from an engineering project into a sea going vessel inside five weeks.
The team effort displayed by the crew and supporting organisation to enable the hand over of the submarine from ASC was nothing short of superhuman.
Once out at sea the trials process began in earnest with the focus on proving Waller as a functional and capable submarine. The combat system and the newly integrated navigation aids were confidence checked and the propulsion system put through its paces as were the myriad of ancillary systems that make up the submarine systems.
