More than 500 competitors confronted a challenging course at the ADF ALTC Cross Country Championships on May 24.

Many Defence members travelled from interstate to run the 7.1km muddy slopes at South Bandiana on Friday, all competing for the Championship Cross Country title. Navy secured third place in the male open and male masters categories.

LSCK Stuart Chellis of HMAS Kuttabul said he had been hoping to come in among the top five runners, pushing for a time of 25 minutes.

“The competition was a high standard, the top five runners were all pretty close together. The course was quiet tough, wet, slippery, treacherous terrain,” he said. He placed third in the male open category.

PO Steven (Grizz) Adams said he was happy with his run, coming 12th overall. He saw himself as a winner even though he didn’t get a top three placing; edging out AB Peter Gilkinson was enough for him to walk away with his head held high.

“We have a bit of ongoing rivalry and I am three to one up on him after today. It is going to be difficult for him to come back in 2007 after this win for me.”

PO Adams also had the opportunity to compete in the same race as his father WO Dave Adams who said the run was pretty tough, having to take it rather steady in some parts of the track. “Especially first up after two hip replacements but I wanted to see if I could complete the course,” he said.

“I had to go down hill nearly as slow as I went up hill but I did well for my age and class so I was pretty happy with that.” Today was a particularly special day as “this was probably the last opportunity to have a run with my son.”
