Great Raids of World War II
BBC
3.5/5 stars

World War II produced some of the most daring raids in history.

Before and after the inception of the SAS, the Commandos, airmen and other soldiers conducted a number of daring missions that helped tip the balance during critical parts of the war.

In this 139-minute BBC documentary, six of the most famous WWII raids are detailed using interviews with veterans, archival footage and careful reconstructions. The documentary starts with perhaps the most daring and successful of these, the raid on a remote heavy water plant in Norway where allies helped stop Hitler building a nuclear bomb by destroying his stock of heavy water and escaping without loss or even raising an alarm.

Other raids include an aerial attack on a prison to help French resistance fighters escape, destroying a German radar installation, using a ship loaded with explosives to ram and destroy a French dry-dock, a daring canoe raid on German ships and an arctic commando assault.

Great SAS Missions
BBC
4.5/5 stars

From the elite unit’s formation to the Iranian embassy liberation in 1980 to searching for Scud missile launchers in the deserts of Iraq, Great SAS Missions explores the world of the British SAS.

Produced by the BBC and narrated by Robert Powell, it uses CGI, archival footage and video re-enactments to tell the tales, and includes interviews with former members.

The DVD is divided into seven segments, which include The Birth of the SAS; Deception on D-Day and Retaking the Falklands.

The similarities between the desert vehicles and their employment in WWII, and the current vehicles on operations in the Middle East are uncanny.

In the last segment – Desert Storm Scudbusters – there is even a mention of the latest escapades in Iraq, detailing a joint Australian-UK SF mission to take an airfield.

Great SAS Missions sacrifices detail for broader coverage but is a good package for the military enthusiast.
