Road cycling titles a chance to shine

Edition 5009, 31 May, 2007

Men and women cyclists will have to demonstrate their versatility if they are to win the 2007 Australian Defence Road Cycling Championships at RAAF base Williamtown on July 14 and 15.

The road titles will consist of a criterium and time trial, as well as a road race.

The overall titles will be awarded to the male and female who amass the most points over the three disciplines.

Titles up for grabs include the Defence road champion (points classification), general classification champion (overall time), road race champion, criterium champion and time trial champion.

“The men’s and women’s A-grade general classification championship (overall time) has been included this year to really add another dimension to the racing,” the Australian Defence Cycle Club president, SGT Mick Rand, of RAAF Base Williamtown said.

“The GC category will run similar to the way tour races are run in professional cycling. Race winners and placegetters will be awarded time bonuses in all categories except for the time trial.”

The men’s A-grade road race this year will be over 60 or 70km, depending on the local club’s guidelines, at 2pm on Saturday, July 14. Women A-grade riders and men’s B-grade will contest a 30 or 40km road race.

The criterium will be at 9am on July 15 with the women’s race preceding the men’s. The time trials will begin at 1.30pm on June 10.

Personnel wishing to attend who will require accommodation on base at Williamtown must send their details (name, rank, PMKEYS and duration of stay) to: SGT Mick Rand, 77 SQN, RAAF Base Williamtown, 2314, NSW or contact michael.rand1@defence.gov.au
