Edition 5008, 17 May, 2007

IN WINNING FORM: ABATV Jordan Dank from HMAS Albatross in action during the inter-Service surfing championships near Newcastle. Navy, the overall winner from Army and Air Force, will host the 2008 competition.
Navy’s ABATV Jordan Dank from HMAS Albatross won the shortboard event at the recent inter-Service surfing championships.

Navy was the overall winner with 210 points, from Army with 180 and Air Force with 156.

Army’s GNR Jeremy White won the longboard event with Army’s CPL Rebecca Piper winning the women’s event. First day events were held at One Mile Beach with Birubi the venue for days two and three. Both are north of Newcastle in NSW.

The opening day was contested with 91-121cm (3-4ft) waves, cross-shore winds and overcast weather. Day two presented 121-182cm waves in sunny weather, offshore winds and near-perfect conditions and waves. Sunny weather, offshore winds, great conditions and good 91-121cm waves were the order of the final day.

“There were a number of broken boards and the size of the swell on day one meant that some competitors struggled to get the minimum three waves in their heats,” Air Force’s CPL Tim Galvin said.
