| A well kept secret of the snowy Edition 5007, 03 May, 2007 |
|
Would you like to know a secret about the Snowy? Inconspicuously located in Cooma, on the way from Canberra to the Snowy Mountains, is a high tech asset known as the Defence Service Centre – Cooma (DSC). DSC is staffed by 80 Cooma-based civilians, most of whom do shift work. They provide Defence Force recruiting information to the public and provide a range of information services for Defence personnel. DSC, which is connected to the Defence Restricted Network (DRN), provides a virtual office into HMAS Harman for LCDR Mike Hardwick, who frequently works for Harman’s Command Team from DSC. With the support of DSC’s Manager, Mr Rob de Rooy, LCDR Hardwick suggested to Harman’s CO, CMDR Nick Youseman, and XO, LCDR Stephen Carroll, that they hold a scheduled business-planning meeting at DSC remote from the distractions of their respective offices. Accompanied by Harman’s COSEC, Mrs Veronica Allibon-Burns, and supported by LCDR Hardwick, the Command Team Executive utilised the DRN connectivity and a fully functional conference room at the DSC facility to efficiently work through Harman’s business planning and strategy. The Command Team Executive was warmly welcomed to DSC by management and staff who are dedicated to serving Defence and the public but are geographically isolated from the former. |
