ADF golfers pip VGA

Edition 5006, April 19, 2007

WO2 Kim Johansen and CPL Marty Evans were the only undefeated ADF Golf Association players as it had a narrow squeak for a 12.5 to 11.5 win against the Victorian Golf Association in mid-March.

The win at Sorrento Golf Club helped erase memories of a narrow defeat in 2006 and gave the ADFGA its third win in the past four years.

Since the inaugural match in 1991, the ADFGA Combined Services team has played against a team of selected amateurs from the Victorian Golf Association. Matches are played in tremendous spirit and expose ADF golfers to a high level of competition.

A morning fourball match opened the first day’s play, followed by foursomes in the afternoon. The VGA took an early lead in most matches, with the exception of the pairing of SGT Pete Chambers (AASPO) and WO2 Kim Johansen (1 Fd Regt) who went on to record a convincing win 5 and 4.

The No. 1 pairing of Andrew Davis and Bill Richardson (VGA) versus LEUT Daryl Whitehead, (DMO) and WOFF Steve McNamara (DITC) provided a great tussle with the VGA winning 1-up.

The Allan Bullas and Paul Lulofs (VGA) versus CPL Marty Evans (1 Sig Regt) and LS Brent Best (LSA-N) match seesawed throughout, with the VGA 1-up through 15 holes. At the 16th CPL Evans was instrumental in a remarkable recovery from a tight situation to square the ledger.

VGA led by four matches to two after the morning’s play. In the afternoon the ADF won 4-2 in the foursomes to level the day’s play at six matches all.

On day two WGCDR Michael Dickson (SRG SOTC) got the ADF off to a solid start with a 4 and 3 win. The next four matches went the way of the VGA until WO2 Kim Johansen recorded a convincing 6 and 5 win over Paul Lulofs.

The following few match results were mixed, until only two matches remained on the course, with a match count of 5 all as the final pairings reached the 18th green and all other players looked on.

Two down with six to go, WOFF Steve McNamara fought back hard to be 1-up as he reached the 18th against Doug Perry. WOFF McNamara made par.

In the other match featuring CPL Mark Patton (AOSG), John Owen had a putt for the win and to square the overall result; it ran agonisingly close but missed. CPL Patton now had a 1.5m putt for the overall win. Showing great composure, he holed the return putt to square the match. The resultant 6.5 to 5.5 win in the singles gave the ADFGA an overall 12.5 to 11.5 win.
