MOVE IT: LCPL Jarrod Entwistle, who is posted to a Navy ship, proves his worth playing for NSW against Air Force in an exhibition basketball match at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

The NSW Navy men’s basketball team was invited to compete against the NSW Air Force team at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, as an exhibition match before the Sydney Kings NBL final on February 16.

The Navy team was equal favourite going into the match with several NSW Combined Services team members representing the Navy. The team played an entertaining style of basketball and looked great at times, however, could not overcome a more experienced Air Force team. The final score saw Air Force beat Navy 63-52.

The Navy men opened the game slowly and couldn’t convert easy opportunities in the first quarter. However, they kicked into top gear late in the first, levelling the game at 14 points apiece at quarter time.

Navy continued to improve in the second, at one point up by five points. Navy top Scorer, AB Nicholas Clancey (17 points) exploded with 10 points which gave the team a much needed boost. The team went into half time down by three points.

Air Force came out strong in the third as their starters gelled nicely having never played together. Navy ended the third down by eight points, after running their bench for most of the quarter.

The final quarter became a battle of attrition with Air Force exercising its fresh legs. Navy were scoring easily through starting centre SMN Brent Nemeth but couldn’t stop Air Force at the defensive end. Air Force stretched the lead and Navy eventually went down by 11 points at the final whistle.

Navy captain AB Clancey said after the game it “was a great team effort by the guys, having never played together”.

Navy players representing the team were: AB Nicholas Clancey, AB Aaron Horne, AB James Miller, AB Huxley, LCPL Jarrod Entwistle, AB Christian Stinson, Brendan Edmistone and SMN Brent Nemeth. Coach CPO Trevor Maybir and manager LS Andrew Corbett.
