Navys Aussie Rules teams have set their sights on repeating last
years drubbing of Army and Air Force in this years carnival
and are odds on favourites to win the Jim Smail Cup (men) and Geoff
Ledger Trophy (women).
Navy Football has been on a high of recent times due to the success of
both mens and womens teams and the camaraderie of the squad.
Navy has been the best turned-out and most professional team off the field
for many years but now that has translated to on-field performance.
The men achieved back-to-back success in 2006 and are hoping for a three-peat
according to coach POCK Michael Oleksyn.
The boys are training hard around the country and ready to defend
the cup with all their might. The teamwork and professionalism of the
players is what is keeping the title in Navys hands where
it belongs, he said.
CPOCIS Rohan Jennings, the coach of the Navy womens side is also
confident.
I saw the determination of the girls last year it was inspirational,
he said.
The improvement from 2005 was great to see and there is no reason
why the standard wont be even better in 2007.
The push to keep Navy at the top of the services football ladder has been
steered by CDRE Clint Thomas as President of the Royal Australian Navy
Football Association (RANAFA). CDRE Thomas helped reinvigorate the Cerberus
Football Club when he was Commanding Officer of the base.
I am keen to get as many people involved as possible. The stronger
the support base, the better the team. Navy will be tough to beat again
this carnival, he said.
The 2007 Australian Services Australian Football Association National
Carnival will be held in Canberra from April 12-20 at Ainslie Oval.
