After several hard-fought attempts, HMAS Cerberus has finally broken through to win a trophy at the Kapooka 10s rugby competition.

An inexperienced, but fit and determined Cerberus side defeated the Army 6RAR team 34-5 in the Kapooka Plate final in hot conditions on March 10.

Stand in and first time coach Glenn Martin said he didn’t think his side was going to win the final.

“I was absolutely surprised. We thought 6RAR would be a lot harder [to beat] than what they were, but to our boys credit they continued to build from the start of the day,” he said.

“If we had to play another game on the day we would have played better than we had played in our last three matches.”

Mr Martin said throughout the competition his team continued to grow as a playing unit.

“They grew in confidence, they are a team that came together three weeks before the competition. I am just so bloody proud of them,” he said.

To get to the plate final the side played three matches, two against Army teams and one against an Air Force side. Their first round match was against the Army Sydney Engineers team, who eventually won the Kapooka 10s cup final.

“We played and lost against the Sydney Engineers 10-5, which put us in to the plate competition,” he said.

“We then played another Army team, the Incident Response Regiment and we beat them fairly convincingly 17-5. We then came up against RAAF STT, which was the last of the pool games and also beat them 17-5.”

Mr Martin said he was impressed with how quickly his side had bonded as a team in such a short period of time.

The team plans to enter in future competitions utilising a large squad of about 45 players, who are currently training at Cerberus.
