| Gascoyne returns
to Top End By LEUT Ben Peck Volume 50, No.4, March 22, 2007 |
| HMAS Gascoyne (LCDR Max Muller) has returned
to Op Resolute duties for another round. After several successful patrols in 2006, Gascoyne has returned to conduct a patrol in the Top End, alongside another hard-working Minehunter HMAS Huon and the Hunter One (LCDR Stewart Dunne) and Hunter Two (LCDR Michael Moore) crews. HMAS Gascoyne was a late entry in the current draw as she was originally scheduled to participate in FCP 1/07 and Exercise Mulgogger during February. With her surprise wild card entry, an intense training program was developed to ensure Gascoyne would be fighting fit for operations. The ships company adapted quickly to the altered training schedule. HMAS Gascoyne undertook a mariner skills evaluation, workup and mission readiness evaluation over a 10-day period between February 7 and 17. In spite of some rough weather and unforgiving conditions, Gascoynes ships company met the challenge head-on to ensure she was declared mission ready for operations as scheduled. On February 20 HMAS Gascoyne sailed from HMAS Cairns up to the Torres Strait; a willing contender in Operation Resolute. One essential ingredient behind HMAS Gascoynes success has been the ongoing fitness program maintained by the ships company. Boarding Team fitness training is conducted every morning and boxercise circuits are conducted in the dogs. |
