Trying triathlon for trio
By Barry Rollings

ON THE RUN: LSPT Luke Morris of HMAS Cerberus works hard during the running leg of the ADF’s long course triathlon titles.

Strong bike legs from Navy’s trio of competitors was not enough to propel them into the top three at the Australian Defence Sports Triathlon Association’s long course championship on February 24-25.

Twelve brave souls contested the second major ADSTA event for the season at Huskisson on the NSW South Coast, where Air Force took the top two places as the fleet-footed FLTLT Richard Gardiner finished second to CPL Geoff Hanckel, of RAAF Richmond, with Army’s WO2 Gavin Wickham third.

CPL Hanckel completed the 2km swim, 83km bike ride and 20km run in 3hr 53min and 32sec, just ahead of FLTLT Gardiner in 4:05.11 and WO2 Wickham in 4:07.23.

The top three ADSTA competitors kept it pretty tight, riding within minutes of each other on the bike leg.

The Navy trio of LSPT Luke Morris (HMAS Cerberus) and POPT Michael “Titch” Turner (HMAS Cerberus) and LCDR Douglas Griffiths (MHQ) were giving it their best shot, with LSPT Morris only 7mins off the bike pace of the ADSTA leaders.

LCDR Griffiths (4:31.087) showed he still had what it takes even after being deployed for months on end.

The three filled fourth to sixth places.

Six ADSTA competitors contested the Australian sprint course championships on the Saturday with the stand out performance being that of Ms Christina Thorne who was second in her age group in 1hr and 16min. FLTLT Ewan Stewart (33SQN RAAF Richmond) won line honours for the ADSTA crew with an overall 1:10.34.

The ADSTA focus now turns to its Iron Man championship at Port Macquarie on April 7.
