ON YOUR BIKE: ABET Gooley puts in the hard yards during the Great Karri Ride in Western Australia.

A team from HMAS Stirling has taken out the mixed team event in the Medibank Private Great Karri Ride.

ABSN Nicole Burton and ABET Ben Gooley competed against strong competition to take out the top prize on March 4.

The Great Karri Ride, as it is more commonly known, is a unique cycling event held in the heart of the ‘Karri Country’ in South West Western Australia.

The event was designed in such a way that it attracted not only the elite of mountain bikers, but beginners as well, and had a non-competitive focus.

It covered 100km which was spread out over some of the state’s most beautiful and exciting forest trails.

The event consisted of completing five stages in total.

ABSN Burton did stages one and two, while ABET Gooley completed stages three and four. They both did the last stage together.

However, if it wasn’t for ABSN Burton’s last stage time of 49mins the win might not of been possible.

The community of Northcliffe presented a fantastic event finishing with a local band and prizes all around.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service was a major sponsor and riders were asked to donate money to them.

The more money that was donated to the charity the more chance competitors had of winning a major prize.

Although ABSN Burton sold $576 worth of chocolate Freddos, of which half went to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the major prize went to another competitor.

The Medibank Private Great Karri Ride was a great mountain bike event and was thoroughly enjoyed by all providing good exposure to the RAN participants in Navy team shirts.

Many were heard saying they would return again next year and with the ever increasing mountain biking fraternity at FBW there will be greater Navy representation next year.

- Personnel interested in pursuing mountain biking (MTB) and in the FBW region are welcome to contact CPOPT Darren Dyball at the Navy Gym West, FBW. Next event on the local MTB calendar is the Gibb River Ride over five days from Kununurra to derby in far north WA.
