| Training over
for RANTES Volume 50, No.3, March 8, 2007 |
| It was the end
of an era when the RAN Training Establishment Salisbury (RANTES) recently
closed its doors. The facility helped to develop and train people in the use of the Ikara and Mulloka systems. The Ikara system conveyed a homing torpedo into a known hostile zone, enabling the torpedo to optimally perform its role of search, find and kill. Another project saw the development of a sonar with parameters more suited for our regions of operations. Mulloka was born. It was installed and trialled on HMAS Yarra where a young Naval Artificer Apprentice, Leading Seaman Phil Hannan cut his teeth on this new capability. He went on to pay-off as a CPOETS and continued to instruct on Mulloka alongside ex-WOETS Wally Birch. With the withdrawal of Mulloka from RAN service, the need for RANTES ceased leading to the closure prior to Christmas. |
