STRONG SIGN: AB Candice Freeman, pictured left, was among the ADF’s best players as the women’s representative Aussie Rules team beat NSW Police by 19 points in a recent match.

SMN Hailey Merrick and AB Candice Freeman were among the best players as the ADF women’s Australian football team powered home to beat NSW Police Services in Sydney on February 24.

The game was played as part of the annual NSW Police Games at Picken Oval in Croydon Park.

The ADF triumphed 8.3 (51) to NSW Police 5.2 (32).

Aside from SMN Merrick and AB Freeman, the ADF women’s team were well served by CPL Rebekah Allen (RAAF), CPL Amy Hall (Army), CPL Kristy Stroop (Army) and CPL Emma Hender (Army).

Both teams tested each other out in the first quarter even though the Police opened the goal scoring within 60 seconds of the start. Scores were level at 1.2 (8) each at the first change.

Scoring opportunities were reduced but accuracy increased in the second quarter, which produced three goals – two to the Police side and one to the ADF.

Police stepped up a notch in the third quarter as the ADF let in two cheap goals and failed to register a score.

The job was still ahead of the ADF in the final quarter but with several changes to the onfield line-up, the ADF then kicked 6.1 to seal the match.
