Friendly banter between the services off the track quickly transformed into intense competition on it, as Navy took part in the ADF Track and Field championships in Brisbane from February 23-25.

Navy’s stand-out performer was AB Daniel Fisk, who had a dramatic finish in the open men’s 400m, hitting the ground as he crossed the finish line defeating RAAF’s LACW Kurt Sayed. AB Fisk also won the open men’s 100m sprint.

AB Fisk called upon his natural ability as an athlete. He competed for fun, having only a few training sessions before the event.

“If I had trained I would have got a better time in the 100m,” he said.

“I played soccer for 13 years and won a few grand finals, but since I joined the Navy it’s been sport for fun.

“I enjoy the competitive sportsmanship and it’s good to be around the same people who do the same thing.”

Unfortunately, AB Fisk won’t be able compete in the Arafura Games this year as he will be at sea for most of the event.

Other notable Navy performances at the championships came from CMDR Andrew Clowes, who came first in the men’s 5000 metre masters event and LEUT Josh Nottle who placed first in the open men’s 1500 metre.

Athletes had to brave hot conditions with temperatures rising to 30 degrees.

Director of coaching for the ADF team CPL Gary Ewart said that the competition on the track was just as fierce.

“We have a bit of a dig at each other, but in general we have a red hot go to try and beat the each other,” he said.

“The numbers are down a bit this year and that’s because of operational tempo of the ADF.

“Some of them are here to qualify for the Arafura Games in Darwin in May and this is a pre-selection championship for that meet.”
