| Patience is a
virtue photographers need, and for LSPH Joanne Edwards, patience has paid
off. It has helped her to capture the image that won the Rosemary Rodwell Memorial Prize photographic competition for a second time. The photo, which captures a dolphin leaping in front of the bow of HMAS Warramunga was deemed to be the most striking and memorable image of the year taken by a Navy photographer in the course of duty. Waiting patiently helped Joanne capture the image, I was onboard Westralia at the time, and when Warramunga approached for a replenishment at sea exercise, I saw a pod of dolphins ahead of her. I already had my camera ready to go, so I just waited for the moment. Using a fast shutter speed and telephoto lens, she photographed a sharp, close-up image of a dolphin as it leapt out of the water. The judges Doug Pryke (Kayell), Cameron Barry (Foto Reisel) and LEUT Chloe Wilson (FPAO) were very impressed by the standard of the 71 images judged for this contest. CPOPH Rob Fengler, the Photographic Category Manager, said that the high number of entries showed the levels of commitment and competitive nature of Navy photographers. Joanne will be very humble in winning the competition; however she should be proud of her continuing achievements, he said. |
