GRADUATE: RADM Crane congratulates CPO Mansell.

A key element of Sea Change is being a “smart Navy” and providing members with worthwhile education and continuing professional development opportunities throughout their career.

While posted to DSCM as an MT Career Manager, I realised that a shortfall existed in my education for such a position.

In 2004, I commenced studying for the Graduate Certificate of Management through the Defence Assisted Study Scheme at ADFA.

The Graduate Certificate of Management forms the first step in an articulated sequence of study to Graduate Diploma and Masters Degree qualifications.

The certificate helped me to gain the knowledge to conceptualise broader issues relating to strategic decision making, change management, organisational culture and human resource management.

I believe these additional skills and a broader understanding can add immediate value to my performance in the work place.

The world at work, including Defence, is currently operating in an environment fuelled by change and uncertainty.

Management studies will provide me with skills and tools to meet these challenges and provide a greater service to Navy in the future.

The sequence of study towards a Masters of Management qualification provides knowledge and analytical skills relevant to the development of enhanced management practices.

It is this sequence of study that I believe to be beneficial to sailors as managers of specific areas and as supervisors of others, particularly for those working within the area of career management or human resource management.
