One of the key areas for the Sea Change program is to improve opportunities for a better lifestyle. CPO Darren Dyball and PO Scott Harriden report on the Inter-Command Challenge held at HMAS Stirling last year.

The competition opened with the women’s netball event.

Initially, Maritime Command (MC) were off to a great start, but it didn’t take long for Navy Systems Command (NSC) to fight back.

NSC’s main scorer and Most Valuable Player (MVP) LSDEN Nicole Perry took the team into a clear lead.

The score was too high for MC to chase, and although a good attempt was made by MC’s goal attack, NSC won the game 31-19.

Touch Football

The spectators were treated to a touch football extravaganza.
The mixed game kicked off proceedings with NSC first to open the account.
From there it was more a game of “tug-o-war” as both teams refused to give an inch.

SBLT Cook’s gallant MVP effort kept MC in the chase, but in the end NSC were defeated 8-5.

The men’s game provided its own brand of magic with trick passing, well rehearsed goose steps and pure speed.

Although MC kept the half time deficit to two, NSC were too good in the second half, sinking MC 15-8.

An outstanding display by LSCD Simmons earned him the games MVP.

Beach Volleyball

The veteran’s game was heated with MC taking the victory 50 to 43.
The most valuable player for the veterans was CPODEN Metcalfe, who performed well throughout the game.

The following game was no different with yet another close victory for MC in the mixed division finishing 44 to 43.

SBLT Churcher displayed an impressive performance to earn him the MVP for the mixed game.

Entertainments

Matty Blade kept the crowd alive by juggling chainsaws and swallowing swords.
An illusionist, Chew Eng Chye, worked the crowd, changing $50 notes into $10 at the amazement and horror of the individuals who owned the money.

The Red Bull girls also made an appearance, handing out free Red Bull drinks.

Soccer

The main event was a square off between NSC and MC.

Tension was high with the sea goers needing to win this match to stand any chance of taking the trophy.

NSC drew first points against a confident MC outfit early in the first half, then scoring another to establish a 2-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, MC created a plethora of opportunities only to see them dissolve into a painful day of disappointment.

Adding insult to injury, NSC scored yet again punching the ball into the back of the net to give them a 3-0 win, taking out the 2006 FBW Inter-Command Challenge.

Although the score line suggests otherwise, LSCSO Wheeler from MC was superb in goal, defusing many a NSC assault and receiving the games MVP.

Navy Systems Command, retained the Perry Cup Trophy from their last victory in Sydney earlier this year.

The day was made possible by Navy Health and the RANCCF who continue to support the Inter Command Challenge, and Navy sport.

Thank you to all of the competitors, officials and supporters who got involved with a particular mention to staff at FBW Gym.
