Finn’s latest album Imaginary Kingdom finds
the former Split Enz front man in a rather melancholy
mood befitting every one of his 54 years on the
planet. Recorded in just three weeks in Nashville
earlier this year, this offering provides a perfect
snapshot of where Finn’s head is at circa
2006. Songs like the whimsical Couldn’t Be
Done and the heartfelt ballad Astounding Moon
showcase Finn’s vastly different song-writing
and vocal talents. It’s one album you won’t
mind pressing “repeat” on.

Rudebox

Robbie
Williams’ 10th album since going solo, Rudebox,
may reflect his experience and maturity, but don’t
think for a second he has discarded his signature
larrikinism. Viva life on Mars has quotes from
Star Wars and She’s Madonna has the melody
and lyrical style reminiscent of fellow Brit-pop-rock
band Queen, who he performed a rendition of We
Will Rock You with. Be warned: fans have been
divided. Some have enjoyed the transition in style
whereas others think he’s trying too hard
to be something he’s not.

I
could not wait for the release of this album by
the Texan band after hearing their single, Roscoe.
This song takes the best parts of 70s classic rock
and is one of the tracks of the year. Unfortunately
the rest of the album cannot match Roscoe’s
brilliance and it becomes a rather dreary, tiring
experience. The warmth of the production may get
some through and hey, it’s better than most
of the crap on radio; however, there have been stronger
albums released this year which deserve more attention.

Gray’s
Anatomy Soundtrack Vol.2

Loving
a TV program is usually a start to truly appreciating
a TV soundtrack. Gray’s Anatomy isn’t
too bad – I usually watch it and have often
thought the soundtrack would be worth picking up.
After first listen – quietly through the work
computer, I nearly stopped being a fan of the show.
This album must be listened to at normal level for
it’s quirky mix of alternative tunes to be
fully appreciated. With Monster Hospital, Sexy Mistake
and Snow Patrol’s acoustic version of Chasing
Cars, Gray’s soundtrack will take you through
to next season.
