Rep selections consolation for Breakers

Volume 49, No. 21, November 16, 2006

Despite a disappointing run in the Commonwealth Navies Rugby Cup (CNRC) in South Africa, the Navy Breakers had five players picked in Commonwealth Navies Barbarians side.

CPO Andrew Bertoncin, AB Scott Lancaster, SMN Diri Nasalo, LEUT Dean Brown, LS Jason Harrington and LS Brad Simmons all played for the Barbarians in a high-scoring loss against a Cape Town selection.

LS Chris Bohan was voted the Breakers’ players’ player for the South African tour which took place from September 28 to October 15.

The Royal Navy retained the Commonwealth Navies Rugby Cup with 10 competition points, with the RNZN second on 9, and the SAN and the Breakers sharing third place on 5 points.

Although they didn’t win the cup, the Breakers did get the chance to play the spoiler.

In their final round match, the Breakers played the Kiwis, who needed to have a big win to capture the title.
New Zealand led 10-3 at halftime and scores remained close throughout the game.

But at the 78th minute the Breakers scored a penalty goal that edged them out to an 18-10 victory.

The Kiwis’ loss left the way open for the RN to claim the cup with a victory in the final round.
