Navy on the front foot

READY TO FACE: PO Nick Knight (at crease) will again lead from the front in the upcoming national cricket championships, just as he did in Brisbane two years ago.

Volume 49, No. 21, November 16, 2006

By Barry Rollings

Navy has retained an experienced core of players from its undefeated campaign of 2004 as it gears up to defend its title at the Australian Services Cricket Association’s national carnival in Brisbane.

The five players, who also shone during the successful 2005 ADF tour to Britain, are top-order batsman POET Nick Knight, wicketkeeper/batsman LSCIS Luke Grimmond, all-rounder LSATA Glenn Cleary and opening bowlers LEUT Matt Ryan and WO Gary Fuss.

“These players will form the core of the side, with a spread of former and new players expected to make up the rest of the side,” team captain PO Knight said.

“Most of the squad members have been playing in their respective local competitions, with WO Fuss and LS Cleary particularly in good form.

“WO Fuss recently took 10 wickets in an innings for his club and made 51 with the bat while LS Cleary has been a key member for his new club Kiama on the NSW South Coast.

“Navy will be looking for these two to carry their fine form into the National Carnival.”

There was no national ASCA carnival last year because of the British tour.

This year’s carnival will be held at Brisbane Grammar School’s grounds in Nudgee Road, Nudgee from Monday to Friday, November 20 to 24.

After a close game against Army, Navy beat Air Force comprehensively for the title in 2004 and will play host for the carnival on the same grounds used in junior development for Queensland Cricket for its under-19s, 17s and 15s.
Games will be 50-over one-day matches from 10am daily with Army and Air Force opening the carnival on November 20.

The loser of that game will play Navy on November 21 with the day-one winner playing Navy on November 22.

In a nutshell:
  • Navy will contest the Australian Services Cricket Association’s national carnival in Brisbane from November 20-24.
  • This year’s carnival will be played at Brisbane Grammar School. It is the same ground used by Queensland for its under-15s, 17s and 19s.
