About 120 Defence personnel from HMAS Stirling and their families joined fellow Australians in National Walk to Work Day on October 6.
The aim of the walk was to raise awareness of the benefits that regular walking and exercise provide.
Walkers, runners, and even one roller-blader waited eagerly at the gates of HMAS Stirling to begin the walk, while enthusiastic physical trainers made sure all participants warmed up and stretched before starting.
The XO LCDR Chris Smith raised the boom gate to officially start the event which has been held nationally for nine years, and for the second time at HMAS Stirling.
The picturesque walk across the causeway onto Garden Island was 6km, and took between 50 and 60 minutes to complete.
Other than promoting regular walking as a healthy activity, Walk to Work Day also aims to reduce our reliance on cars, to promote and improve the use of public transport and to improve our air quality by reducing vehicle emissions.
People were encouraged to leave the car at home, or some distance from work, and walk to work with thousands of other Australians all around the country
As Australia’s population ages, improving and maintaining health is becoming increasingly important for the wellbeing of individuals.
Hopefully this year’s walk will encourage people to participate in more sporting activities to keep themselves and their family fit and healthy.
As the Government is advertising, find 30. It’s not that hard.
