Cross country adds water

UP THE CREEK (far left): CPO Cheryl Winston navigates one of the icy swollen creeks during the running of the Kokoda Barracks Cross Country race.

NOT PUFFING (left): It was all smiles for CPO Steve Tyrie at the halfway mark of the 7km race, which was run on a sodden track after a heavy week of rain leading up to the event.

With water restrictions still in force throughout Queensland, a number of Navy contestants thought a quick, dry track would be in play for the annual Kokoda Barracks Cross Country.

But due to an act of God, the Canungra area saw a week of heavy rain leading up to the race.

Because of the rain, a number of the streams that cross the course were flowing with ice-cold water.
It was the kind of cold water that makes anyone think twice before jumping in.

Over 200 competitors took part in this year’s event and most survived unscathed apart from a few bumps, bruises and scratches.
The Defence Intelligence Training Centre took out the much sought-after Kokoda Barracks Cross Country Trophy, which followed on from the same team’s win in the swimming event.
