The Australian Hydrographic Service recently hosted French naval officer LEUT Julien Simon, who was finishing his final year engineering studies.
LEUT Simon is the third French naval officer that the Navy’s Hydrographers have hosted in order to learn another country’s customs and cultures, and also undertake a project of mutual benefit.
The project LEUT Simon created is a GIS-based tool that enables Navy to prioritise its hydrographic survey areas and to make more rigorous evaluations of the hydrographic survey requests received from both civilian and Defence.
This will have a positive impact on the allocation of hydrographic resources.
LEUT Simon has since returned to France, where he will graduate from ENSIETA and be posted to his first French naval vessel.
