Rare honour

MASTER PROJECT: LCDR Murray Lindsay receives his Master of Project Management from DMO Chief Executive Dr Stephen Gumley and University of South Australia Pro Vice-Chancellor Robin King.

Volume 49, No. 18 , October 05, 2006

LCDR Murray Lindsay was recently awarded a student prize for his efforts in the Project Managers Development Program (PMDP).

The Defence Materiel Organisation-sponsored program, which involves selected candidates from within DMO and other Defence groups, is run over an intensive 11-month period.

In a rare honour, the PMDP class of 2005 was awarded the Student Prize by the ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) at their annual awards night on August 30.

The award was made on the basis that the class as a whole made a significant contribution to the project management body of knowledge through an examination of the effect of social systems within project teams.

LCDR Lindsay, who is the AIR 9000 Phase 6 Project Manager, was the only RAN member of two uniformed personnel on the 15-strong course (AIR 9000 Phase 6 is the RAN aspect of the MRH90 helicopter procurement to replace both the Army Black Hawk and Navy Sea King helicopters).

The Student Prize is usually an individual award but in this case the assignments of the entire class for the unit in Project Acquisition and Integration (Lecturer – Dr Errol Lawson) were considered as a single body of work.

The academic content leading to the award of a Masters in Project Management is delivered by the University of South Australia and involves both syndicate work and individual assignments.

The academic aspect of the course is conducted in Canberra and covers 12 Project Management units in three academic blocks.

In addition, students study Defence specific subjects leading to the award of a Certificate IV in Government (Procurement).

Between academic blocks, students conduct two periods of work placements in which they are exposed to a range of practical Project Management situations in the work environment.
