Volume 49, No. 14, August 10, 2006
Carnival
Kasey Chambers
EMI
AUSTRALIAN country princess Kasey Chambers has been reborn with this album, her fourth to date. Thin country songs have been replaced with thick rock/pop infused tunes, powered by the backing strength of ex-Midnight Oil’s guitarist Jim Moginie and John Butler Trio drummer Michael Barker. Spice is added with the guest vocals of Tim Rogers and Bernard Fanning.

Flyleaf
Flyleaf
Octone
SITTING is not an option when listening to Flyleaf’s self-titled debut album, and I don’t recommend driving either. The music is excitingly fresh, a wicked blend of rock that will be the answer to your commercial radio woes. Lacey Mosley’s rare ability to sing melodiously one minute and then rock your ears off with a strong, aggressive scream is a real highlight. You’ll love the whole album.

Youth
Matasyahu
Sony BMG
IF you ask me, there are nowhere near enough Jewish singers in mainstream music these days. Matasyahu is mainstream though, and King without a Crown, his first single, will be the one you’ve seen on Saturday morning TV – it’s quite catchy. Youth is reggae with a yamulka instead of dreadlocks and so unique in sound you’re bound to become a fan. This is music with a message.
