Net widens for submariners

Volume 49, No. 12, July 13, 2006

The Navy has cast a wide net in the search for more submariners to crew Collins Class boats and may soon see the benefits of the direct marketing campaign targeting civilians with the required qualifications.

The Navy participated in two major career expos in Melbourne earlier this year that provided eagle-eyed recruiting officers from SM FEG with the opportunity to win the hearts and minds of thousands of potential submariners.

The SM FEG recruiting team comprised WO Len Carr, POETSM Mark Layton, LS Melisa Henry and AB Vicky Kelly, took part in the Careers Expo at Caulfield Race Course during April 21-23.
WO Carr told Navy News they had access to 10,000 potential submariners including some 2,000 Year 12 students, about 100 of whom were interviewed to determine their suitability. The recruiting team received welcome support from the Minister for Defence, Dr Brendan Nelson. The second and largest expo was held at the Exhibition Centre in Melbourne during May 5-6 and was attended by 30,000 job seekers.

For further information contact CPOETSM Ash Davis on (08) 95533692 or POETSM Mark Layton on (08) 95533821.
