Italian war drama is full of flavour
The Wedding Officer
Anthony Capella
Time Warner books
342 pages, $29.95

There’s nothing wrong with a drama/romance novel and this one is not in the least bit cheesy. The Wedding Officer is about a Capt James Gould, a British officer posted to Naples in the war. He has a number of administrative jobs, one of which is to assess the suitability of girls who want to marry British personnel.

He finds a city in confusion; normal people trying to have a healthy existence with very little, and a group of seedy after-dark, back alley folk that make life harder for everyone. Gould challenges his values to do the right thing by the Army, himself, and the citizens.
This is a lovely book, rich in descriptions of the country and food that features heavily. Perfect for a long flight.

– LT Simone Heyer
