A youthful Navy team got off to a flying start in the ACT/SNSW inter-service lawn bowls competition before being overhauled by a combined team at Queanbeyan Bowling Club on July 26 and 27.
To accommodate numbers in attendance, Navy was pitted against a side consisting of five Air Force and two Army personnel, two public servants and CPO Lindsay Fitzgerald from Navy.
Navy came out firing on day one and blew the opposition off the green with a convincing 6-1 lead after winning two rinks to one for an overall win.
Some of the old campaigners began to find their form in the afternoon game and although the combined team took only one rink, that was enough to take the overall win by five shots.
The stage was set for a great final battle on the second day with Navy’s lead shaved to 8-6.
All three games were relatively competitive on day two but the combined side finally performed to expectations and won three rinks to nil to surge to a 13-8 win.
CAPT Adam Grunsell made the presentations to the winners and individual trophy winners following a presentation plaque to the Queanbeyan Club for continued support to RAN Lawn Bowls.
Awards for the best lead bowlers went to LCDR Steve House, MAJ Rick Beer and FSGT Vedette Morris.
Most valuable player awards were won by PO Tony Howard, MAJ Barry Dachs, SGT Mark Cronan and Paul Beavis.
Best performer overall was MAJ Barry Dachs.
The best performed team was that comprising FLTLT Russell Fox, SQNLDR Peter Whittaker, FSGT Shaun Keitel and Paul Beavis.
Unbeaten on the first day of competition and being responsible for the combined side still being in the competition, they met the undefeated Navy team comprising WO Dave Adams, PO Tim McGregor, PO Tony Howard and CPO Harry Coulson.
In what transpired as the game of the series, the combined side won 21-20.
