Final sees Navy slam dunked

Volume 49, No. 14, August 10, 2006

By CPL Nicky Parker

The strongly-fancied Navy men could not overcome the more experienced Air Force team in the NSW Inter-Service Basketball Championships at Randwick Barracks from July 12-14 and lost the final 96-67.
The men’s team was equal favourite throughout the tournament, for the VSG Browning Trophy.

In a two-way battle for the women’s title, the Navy women combined with the Army side to win the final convincingly against Air Force team.
The combined team drew with Air Force in the opening encounter with Air Force winning the second game.
But the Air Force women won the title, as the only service to field a full side.

The Navy men opened their campaign with an impressive victory against an under-manned Army team. Top scorer was AB Nicholas Clancey with 26 points, followed closely by AB Horne with 25.
Navy continued to improve in the next game against Air Force despite losing by 40 points. Top scorers were AB Clancey with 17 and AB Horne with 13.

Navy men won the semi-final against Army by 73 points. Top scorers were AB Clancey with 15 and AB Horne with 10.

The ADF Combined Services Basketball Championships will be held in Townsville from December 3-9. Navy players selected in the NSW Combined Services women’s train-on squad are: LS Brianna Budgen, LS Dale-Maree Dalton, AB Kate Goggins, AB Sarah Legg, AB Jo Mercieca and Julie Filke. Navy players selected in the NSW Combined Services men’s train-on squad are: AB Scott Bailey, AB Nicholas Clancey, AB Russell Dawson, AB AJ Horne, AB James Miller, AB Christian Stinson and SME Brent Nemeth.
