Challenge is on to squash Air Force

Volume 49, No. 13, July 27, 2006

Navy will play Army for the right to challenge last year’s winner, Air Force, for the interservices teams title at the 2006 ADF Squash Championships at RAAF Base Williamtown from August 25-28.

Interservice teams of four men and four women will be selected by senior service representatives to contest the inter-services championship on August 27.

Navy men face no easy task because Army is still smarting after losing the teams title on a points countback last year.

However, Navy will welcome the fact that Army is without WO1 Craig Simmich, who has won the men’s open 12 times but recurring knee injuries and work commitments will keep him off the scene this year.

The championships are open to ADF personnel of all levels. The four-day tournament is not aimed at elite players, with players of all standards encouraged to attend.

Events to be contested are the men’s and women’s open singles, graded events (A to F depending on numbers), masters and doubles (dependent on time constraints and numbers).

Touring teams will be announced after the presentations for an Australian tour with the New Zealanders and the Arafura Games team to compete in Darwin in May 2007.

If the NZRAF accepts the invitation to attend the ADF nationals, a two-week tour will follow with matches between the two expected to include Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
