Cool shots take aim at biathlon

Volume 49, No. 9, June 1, 2006

Think biathlon and it may well revive memories of the recent Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

But you won’t necessarily have to be of Olympic standard to participate for Navy in this year’s cleverly-named Exercise Cool Shot 2006.

Biathlon is a demanding and technical activity that brings together the diverse sports of cross-country skiing and marksmanship shooting.

Exercise Cool Shot will have two stages, with a third optional.
The training and selection phase will run from July 30 to August 5 with competition from August 6-11.

Exercise Cool Shot will be conducted at Whisky Flat Alpine Biathlon Range near Mt Hotham, where the 50m range was upgraded to international standards in May 2004.

The optional phase three on August 12-13 will allow personnel to participate in either the Australian National Biathlon Championships at Mt Hotham in Victoria or the Snowy Mountains Classic at Perisher.

Biathlon trains participants to shoot well under conditions of physical and mental stress. For Navy biathlon newcomers or those who reached veteran status long ago, there is much to learn in a short time.
