Cutting weight at Kuttabul
Winners can be losers

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Some of the participants in the inaugural Kuttabul Biggest Winner Weight Loss Competition ready to take on the challenge.

By Michael Brooke

Following the popularity of the reality television program the Biggest Loser the PTIs at HMAS Kuttabul (CMDR Brett Chandler) recently launched the inaugural Kuttabul Biggest Winner Weight Loss Competition.

The 12-week competition kicked off on May 15 and will involve 12 competitors, who have been split into two teams of six, with each comprising three men and three women.

CPOPT Marty Karow said the two teams will be required to participate in four fitness sessions per week, as well as fortnightly team challenges, which could include activities such as canoeing, rock-climbing, obstacle courses, and various endurance tests.

Competitors have medical clearances to participate in this competition, and they will be strictly monitored by PT staff.

“In between these sessions, the competitors will be required to exercise at other times determined by their team,” he said.
Every Friday of each week the competitors will weigh-in and the results will be recorded, with the team that records the highest percentage of weight loss to be rewarded.

The two competitors who record the highest percentage of weight loss at the end of the competition will each win electronic exercise equipment supplied by Lifefitness.

“What we are hoping is that we will encourage, support, and facilitate these twelve individuals to a healthier, and fitter lifestyle, which will show positive results, and that those twelve people in turn inspire another forty, or fifty other defence personnel, family members and friends to adopt a healthier lifestyle also,” CPOPT Karow said.

“Most people with weight issues find it difficult to get motivated and exercise. It is hoped that the team-orientated format of this competition will encourage teamwork, and support from other team members.
“This competition will be challenging, but a lot of fun also.”

The grand final weigh-in will be conducted at NISC at 3pm on August 14, 2006.
