More than 200 uniformed and civilian personnel slogged it out to become the best sports departmental/ship in the west, when West Sportex 1/06 was contested at HMAS Stirling.

Held from April 10-13, sports were contested in a range of events including softball, squash, golf, volleyball, indoor soccer and netball.

Day one started with softball and squash, and although only three teams turned up to fight it out for softball, competition was gripping with AUSCDT Four eventually taking away a well deserved win.

Twelve players competed in a knockout for the squash, with LEUT Hugh Jones eventually coming up victorious after a tightly contested final match against CO HMAS Anzac, CAPT Ian Middleton.

On day two, 11 teams were hoping to set and spike their way to immortality in the volleyball, and it was a Defence civilian team (JLU-W) who conquered all.

Golf was also contested on day two in a two-man ambrose event at Rockingham Golf Course. Sixty two players teed-off, before CPO Tom Costello and LS Adam Simpson (HMAS Westralia) took victory.

The gym floor was the scene of the indoor soccer battle on day three. HMAS Warramunga and HMAS Anzac fought it out in the grand final with Warramunga giving Anzac a serious lesson in soccer, winning 3-1.

Netball was the last sport to be played on day four of competition.
Five teams competed, and Anzac’s Vipers provided some entertaining and well choreographed team dance moves for the crowd before each of their games. Defence civilian team DSTO defeated HMAS Warramunga in the final to wrap-up a fantastic week of sport.

The event concluded with a barbecue lunch provided by CO HMAS Stirling, CMDR Paul Bartlett, where presentations were made. Many thanks also went to the Red Bull Girls, who had their work cut out for them during the presentation lunch, with a constant demand for their energising and refreshing products.

CO HMAS Stirling, and Deputy Secretary CSIG, Mr Allan Henderson, presenting the overall-winning trophy to FIMA Perth at the presentation ceremony.
