Volume 49, No. 7, May 04, 2006

The CO of Australian Clearance Diving Team Four, LCDR Ash Shanks, presented his first CO’s commendation to POCD Greg McManus for helping save the life of a young girl in March.

While enjoying a sunny afternoon on the family boat at the Swan Yacht Club in Fremantle, PO McManus provided aid to a two year-old girl being carried out of the water by an off-duty nurse.

The young girl, unconsious and with no vital signs, was immediately inverted to drain the water from her lungs. Greg, stating to the nurse that he was medically trained in the RAN, then assisted in resuscitating the child and calling for an ambulance.

After three-four minutes of resuscitation, the child started breathing again.

Greg reassured the father and asked him to keep talking to his daughter until the ambulance arrived to transport the girl to Fremantle Hospital.

Greg’s assistance not only saved the young girl’s life but also enhanced the Navy’s reputation to the civil community.
