Mindil
Beach, in the Northern Territory, is a little cleaner following the participation
of Navy personnel in Clean Up Australia Day.
Forty sailors and officers
from HMAS Coonawarra, Shoal Bay Receiving Station and FIMA Darwin took part in
the event on February 28.
They all donned gloves, and with garbage bags
in tow, headed out to Mindil Beach, which is world famous for its sunset markets,
now in their 18th year.
Also held at the beach is the annual Darwin Beer
Can Regatta.
Some debris from last years rafts was found on the beach
during the clean up.
Two groups of Navy personnel spent two hours combing
the beach and surrounding park areas for rubbish.
A total of 100 garbage
bags were filled and four ute-loads of rubbish were disposed of in the skip bins
provided by Darwin City.
On completion of the clean up, a barbecue was
held at the Arrow Bar onboard Coonawarra.
All Clean Up Australia Day participants
were given a chance to cool off with a free soft drink and a steak sandwich supplied
by the ships fund and cooked by the supply department.
